The Kano State Police Command has prohibited Emir Sanusi from organizing the traditional Durbar festival during the 2025 Eid-El-Fitr celebrations, citing security concerns and the need to maintain public order.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, made this announcement on Friday during a press briefing at the Bompai Police Headquarters in Kano.
Bakori stated that the decision was taken to ensure a peaceful and secure environment for all residents during the festivities.
He assured that adequate security measures had been put in place to protect worshippers at designated Eid prayer grounds across the state.
“As we celebrate, let us remember that peace is paramount. We must put aside our differences and work together as law-abiding citizens for the progress of our state and nation,” Bakori urged.
Additionally, the police commissioner reiterated the ban on horse riding (Kilisa), car racing, and reckless driving during the festive period, emphasizing that violators would face legal consequences.
The Durbar festival, a centuries-old tradition featuring royal horse parades, cultural displays, and a grand procession by the Emir and his entourage, has been a significant highlight of Sallah celebrations in Kano.
The ban, however, raises concerns among residents and traditional stakeholders about the impact on cultural heritage.
