Former presidential candidate of the defunct National Conscience Party (NCP), Martin Onovo, has outlined key strategies the opposition must adopt to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, Onovo emphasized the importance of unity among opposition parties and the selection of a strong, credible candidate with a clear vision for the country.

“The coalition of opposition leaders needs a vigorous candidate with a clear agenda and a strong background of integrity. Nobody is perfect, but the opposition needs someone who is morally, mentally, and physically competent,” Onovo stated.

He further stressed that the opposition must avoid fielding older candidates like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, advocating instead for a younger, energetic leader.

“The opposition doesn’t need any old person now. It is time to use the energy of the young,” he added.

Onovo’s remarks come amid growing discussions about a coalition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar recently announced the formation of a mega opposition alliance aimed at unseating Tinubu, with prominent figures like Peter Obi (represented by Dr. Yunusa Tanko), Babachir Lawal, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai in attendance.

Despite the opposition’s growing unity, Onovo acknowledged that the APC could still retain power if Tinubu successfully addresses pressing issues such as economic hardship and security challenges.

“If the present administration resolves key economic issues and security concerns, it could strengthen the APC’s chances in 2027,” he noted.
