Nigerian Midwife Advises Pregnant Women to Shave Before Labour, Says It Aids Delivery Process
A Nigerian midwife, Joy Eke Ilediagu, has advised pregnant women to maintain personal hygiene, particularly shaving their pubic area, before heading to the hospital for childbirth.
In a Facebook post that has since gone viral, Ilediagu appealed to expectant mothers to take shaving seriously as part of their preparation for delivery, noting that it helps health workers during labour and delivery procedures.
“Help us and help yourself. As soon as you enter the last days of your pregnancy, please keep the racing field clean — always shave, please,” she wrote.
She further encouraged women to seek assistance from their partners if they find it difficult or make use of a mirror to do it themselves.
While adding a bit of humour to her post, she wrote: “I’m just a midwife, don’t also add hunter work to my job. Some will come into labour with a thick forest.”
Ilediagu explained that aside from cleanliness, shaving helps medical practitioners navigate the delivery process better and can even help prevent minor tears during childbirth.
“If not for anybody, just imagine if your baby is coming out and mistakenly grabs that hair… my sister, e no go funny (jokes though),” she added.
