Former Manchester United midfielder, Nemanja Matic, has criticised current United goalkeeper, Andre Onana, describing him as “one of the worst goalkeepers” in the club’s history.
Matic’s remarks came in reaction to Onana’s recent comments ahead of Manchester United’s Europa League quarter-final clash with French side Lyon. Onana had confidently stated that United are “way better” than Lyon despite the club’s domestic struggles.
Manchester United, currently placed 13th in the Premier League, are enduring a difficult season but remain unbeaten in Europe. They face Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie on Thursday, April 10.
Speaking to the media, Matic questioned Onana’s authority to make such bold claims, given his poor run of performances since joining United from Inter Milan in 2023.
“You know, I respect everyone, but to say that, then you need to give the answer,” Matic said. “If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United’s history, you need to take care of what you are talking about.”
The Serbian midfielder further stated that such confidence should come from United’s legendary goalkeepers like David De Gea, Peter Schmeichel, or Edwin van der Sar.
“But if you’re one of the statistically worst goalkeepers in Man United’s modern history, then you need to prove yourself before talking like that,” he added.
