The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has alerted Nigerians to the activities of cybercriminals operating a fake website impersonating the Google Play Store.
This warning was issued on Friday, April 11, 2025, by Hadiza Umar, the agency’s Head of Corporate Affairs and External Relations, during a press briefing in Abuja.
According to NITDA, the fraudulent website is being used to distribute a newly identified malware known as the Play Praetor Trojan. Ms. Umar explained that unsuspecting users are being targeted through phishing emails, malicious adverts, and SMS messages that redirect them to download apps from the fake platform.
“Cybercriminals are using fraudulent websites designed to mimic the Google Play Store to lure victims into downloading malicious applications,” she said.
She further explained that once installed, the malware grants attackers unauthorized access to users’ devices, which could lead to data theft, financial fraud, and remote control of victims’ smartphones.
To mitigate the risks, Ms. Umar advised Nigerians to be vigilant and only download apps from verified platforms such as the official Google Play Store or other trusted sources.
She also urged the public to verify app developers, read user reviews, regularly update their devices and applications, and deploy reputable mobile security solutions to detect potential threats.
NITDA reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Nigerians in the digital space and encouraged users to report any suspicious online activities for prompt investigation and action.
