Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a surprise 72-hour ceasefire in Ukraine to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, urging Kyiv to observe the temporary truce.

In a statement released by the Kremlin on Monday, Moscow said the ceasefire would last from May 8 through May 10, halting all hostilities in recognition of Victory Day celebrations.

“Based on humanitarian considerations, the Russian side is declaring a truce during the 80th anniversary of Victory Day,” the Kremlin announced. It further urged Ukraine to reciprocate, warning that any violations would be met with an “adequate and effective response” from Russian forces.

The move mirrors a previous 30-hour truce during Easter earlier this year, which saw a brief reduction in fighting, although both sides accused each other of numerous violations.

Putin’s announcement follows mounting international pressure, particularly from U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently called on Moscow to “stop shooting” and “sign a deal” to end the three-year conflict.

The Trump administration has been actively pushing for a permanent ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine but has so far struggled to secure meaningful concessions from the Kremlin.

Speaking on Monday, the White House clarified that President Trump seeks a lasting resolution, emphasizing that a short-term pause is insufficient to achieve peace in the region.

Meanwhile, despite the truce announcement, tensions remained high overnight as Ukraine and Russia exchanged long-range strikes.

Russia’s Defence Ministry reported downing 119 Ukrainian drones, primarily over the Bryansk border region.

The situation remains fluid as both sides weigh the possibility of broader diplomatic talks amid the temporary ceasefire.
