A civil society organisation, the Zamfara Anti-Corruption and Security Watchdog, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to act on its promise to investigate alleged financial mismanagement during the tenure of former Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle.

The group, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Bello Garba Gusau, expressed deep concern over the perceived delay in probing multiple petitions involving the alleged misappropriation of over ₦250 billion between 2019 and 2023.

According to the watchdog, a report issued by the Zamfara State Transition Committee, chaired by former Inspector General of Police, MD Abubakar, had earlier uncovered widespread financial irregularities under the Matawalle administration.

The report allegedly pointed to numerous abandoned or unexecuted public projects despite funds being released for them.

Among the projects cited are the Gusau International Cargo Airport, 14 Local Government Lodges, renovations at the Government House, and several road construction efforts across the state — all reportedly incomplete or nonexistent.

“The transition report revealed that over ₦250 billion of state funds were either misappropriated or misapplied by Matawalle’s government. A forensic investigation by the EFCC will clarify how this huge fund was deployed or misused,” the statement said.

The group further urged the EFCC to demonstrate consistency and impartiality in its operations, warning that selective investigations could compromise the credibility of the nation’s anti-corruption drive.

It referenced the commission’s recent actions against other top public figures including ex-Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Betta Edu; ex-lawmakers; and former governors such as Yahaya Bello, Willie Obiano, and Theodore Orji.

“If the EFCC could probe and prosecute those public officials, then the former governor of Zamfara State should not be an exception,” the group insisted.

They emphasised that no one should be above the law, regardless of status or political affiliation.

“There should be no sacred cows in the fight against corruption,” the statement noted.

The Zamfara Anti-Corruption and Security Watchdog concluded by reaffirming its commitment to promoting transparency, justice, and good governance in the state. It urged the EFCC to act swiftly and transparently to rebuild public trust.

“All eyes are on the EFCC,” the statement declared. “We will continue to advocate for accountability and social justice in Zamfara State.”
