Nottingham Forest forward and Nigeria international, Taiwo Awoniyi, has been placed in an induced coma following emergency surgery on a serious abdominal injury, the Daily Mail has reported.
Awoniyi sustained the injury during Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Leicester City at the City Ground after a heavy collision with the goalpost while attempting to convert a cross from teammate Anthony Elanga.
Despite receiving on-field treatment and briefly continuing, the 26-year-old was later substituted as the pain worsened.
Forest’s medical team reportedly uncovered the full extent of the damage on Monday, which led to an urgent surgical procedure.
The surgery, though described as serious, is not believed to be life-threatening. Awoniyi is currently receiving intensive care, and updates on his recovery are expected in the coming days.
