Nigerian international and Nottingham Forest forward, Taiwo Awoniyi, is reportedly out of an induced coma and recuperating with his family following emergency abdominal surgery.
Awoniyi, 27, was rushed to the hospital after sustaining a serious injury during Nottingham Forest’s 2-2 draw against Leicester City on Sunday.
The forward collided forcefully with the goalpost while attempting to convert a late scoring chance, prompting immediate medical attention.
According to Pulse Sports and further confirmed by the Daily Mail, doctors placed Awoniyi in an induced coma following the initial phase of surgery.
The procedure was completed on Monday night and the striker is now awake, stable, and surrounded by loved ones.
The injury, which involved internal trauma, was considered potentially life-threatening, necessitating swift surgical intervention.
Sources close to the team have described the situation as delicate but encouraging.
Nigerians at home and abroad have rallied in support of Awoniyi. Former Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen were among those who took to social media to offer prayers.
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi also joined in, urging Nigerians not to take the situation lightly and to continue praying for the player’s full recovery.
