A female pilgrim from Plateau State, Nigeria, Hajiya Jamila Muhammad, has died while performing the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
The sad development was confirmed in a statement released Monday night by the Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Daiyabu Dauda, who also serves as the Amirul Hajj for the state delegation.
According to the statement, Hajiya Jamila passed away at the King Abdul’aziz Hospital in Makkah after suffering complications related to diabetes, as diagnosed by attending medical professionals.
“From God we are, and to Him we shall all return,” the statement began. “With a heavy heart and total submission to the will of Allah, Plateau State has lost one of its female pilgrims, Hajiya Jamila Muhammad, on Monday, 2nd of June, 2025, at the King Abdul’aziz Hospital in Makkah as a result of diabetic complications.”
Dauda noted that upon being informed of her health condition, swift medical intervention was ordered in line with the directives of the state governor, Caleb Mutfwang. Despite these efforts, she passed away shortly after admission.
In a show of solidarity and respect, several officials and relatives of the deceased joined in the Janazah (funeral prayer) held at the Grand Mosque before she was laid to rest according to Islamic rites.
Quoting the Qur’an, Dauda reflected: “And whoever leaves his home as an emigrant to Allah and His Messenger and then death overtakes him, his reward has already become incumbent upon Allah” (Qur’an 4:100).
The Executive Secretary extended his deepest condolences to the Government of Plateau State, her immediate family, friends, and the wider Muslim Ummah. He prayed, “May Allah forgive her shortcomings and grant her Aljannatul Firdaws.”
