Kenyan President William Ruto has raised eyebrows and laughter alike after jokingly commenting on the growing number of Kenyan women marrying Nigerian men, including two of his own daughters.
Speaking at a wedding ceremony, a moment captured in a viral video shared by Africa Facts Zone on X (formerly Twitter), Ruto playfully remarked that Kenyan men may be lagging behind in matters of love and courtship.
“My daughter is married to a Nigerian, and this one is now married to a Nigerian. And our guys around; I don’t know, are you slow? I don’t know,” the President quipped. “We need to balance this scale because at this rate, we are going to have a brain drain from Kenya.”
While the comment was made in jest, it sparked conversations online about cross-cultural unions and the strengthening bonds between African nations. Ruto emphasized the positive side of these ties, saying the marriages reflect the close relationship between Kenya and Nigeria.
“I think there is something between Kenya and Nigeria, we should pick it up further,” he added.
