Nations League final between Portugal and Spain on Sunday, June 8, as a fan lost his life after falling from the stands inside the Munich stadium.

The fan reportedly fell from the central tier during the first period of extra time, plunging into the press box located on the lower level—an estimated fall of about eight meters. Emergency responders, including paramedics and police officers, immediately rushed to the scene in an attempt to provide medical assistance.

In a statement issued shortly after the incident, a UEFA spokesperson confirmed the unfortunate event, describing it as a “medical emergency” and noting with regret that a supporter had “sadly” died during the match.

The final, which ended in a dramatic 5-3 penalty shootout victory for Portugal after a 2-2 draw, was overshadowed by the loss. Both teams expressed their sympathies following the match.

Spain’s head coach, Luis de la Fuente, offered his condolences during the post-match press conference. “I want to show my deepest condolences because a fan has died. It reminds us of what is important in life,” he said solemnly.

Portugal’s camp also reacted with sadness. A team representative noted that the tragic event “casts a shadow on our victory today.” Head coach Roberto Martinez added, “It’s extremely sad news. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the fan.”
