Former senator and civil rights activist, Shehu Sani, has advised the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Nigeria to consider adopting a novel protest strategy similar to that of their counterparts in the Niger Republic.
Sani, in a social media post, referenced the recent action of the Teachers Union in Niger Republic, who threatened to award free marks to students as a form of protest if their government fails to meet their demands.
He described the move as a creative form of resistance and encouraged ASUU to reflect on its potential.
“The Teachers Union of Niger Republic is threatening to give free marks to students if the Government fails to meet their demands. I call on my comrades in ASUU to study this strategy,” he wrote.
ASUU has long been at loggerheads with the Federal Government over issues of funding, welfare, and university autonomy, often resulting in prolonged strikes that disrupt academic calendars.
