The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the recent wave of killings in Benue State, which reportedly claimed the lives of over 200 persons, including children.
The opposition party described the incident as another grim reminder of the growing insecurity under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP expressed shock over what it called the “coordinated daily bloody attacks” by terrorists and bandits in various communities across Benue.
The party accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration of failing to take meaningful and urgent action to halt the violence.
“It is alarming that terrorists continue to overrun communities, killing hundreds of defenceless citizens unchallenged, while the APC government under President Tinubu remains largely indifferent,” Ologunagba stated.
The PDP further alleged that President Tinubu’s “lethargic approach” to tackling the security crisis, coupled with the APC’s “alleged complicity” in failing to confront the matter head-on, has emboldened violent actors across the country.
“It is traumatic to watch gory images and videos of fellow Nigerians murdered in cold blood while the President and his party carry on as though nothing is amiss.
President Tinubu should be held accountable for these killings, having failed to show the leadership expected of a Commander-in-Chief,” the statement added.
The party also criticized the government’s reliance on “lame press statements” rather than concrete action, claiming that the Tinubu-led administration appears overwhelmed and more focused on political survival than protecting citizens.
According to the PDP, over 600,000 Nigerians have been killed in violent attacks over the past two years, a statistic it says underscores the gravity of the security situation in the country.
While commending the efforts of security personnel who continue to make sacrifices despite leadership challenges, the PDP urged the President to immediately visit the affected communities in Benue and take decisive measures to curb the bloodshed.
“We mourn with the families of the victims of these senseless killings and call on the security agencies to intensify efforts in restoring peace and order,” the party concluded.
