Amount Air India Will Pay Sole Crash Survivor Officially Announced

Ahmedabad plane crash that claimed 241 lives, Air India has announced an interim compensation of ₹25 lakh (approximately €24,500 or ₦43.5 million) for each victim’s family and the sole survivor of the crash.

The airline confirmed the compensation on Saturday via an official statement, expressing solidarity with the victims’ families and assuring continued support.

This latest development follows a prior commitment by Tata Sons—Air India’s parent company—of ₹1 crore (around €98,000 or ₦177.6 million) per victim’s next of kin. Together, the total support now approaches ₦221 million per affected family.

“As part of our continued efforts, Air India will be providing an interim payment of ₹25 lakh each to the families of the deceased and to the survivor, to help address immediate financial needs,” the airline stated in a post on X.

The crash involved a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route to Gatwick Airport in London. Tragically, it crashed into a medical college hostel in Ahmedabad during the lunch hour on Thursday.

The only survivor, 40-year-old Ramesh Viswashkumar, a British citizen of Indian descent seated in 11A, is currently receiving medical treatment.

The Ahmedabad tragedy has been described as the world’s deadliest aviation disaster in the past decade. In response, Air India has deployed support teams to assist grieving families and coordinate relief efforts on the ground.

“Tata Sons and Air India deeply mourn this immense tragedy. We are doing all we can to support those affected during this incredibly difficult time,” said N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, in his first public comment following the crash.
