An Osun State Chief Magistrate Court in Ila-Orangun has sentenced a 25-year-old man, Raji Ridwan, to three years imprisonment with hard labour for attempting to rape a female student at the Federal University of Science, Ila-Orangun.
The incident occurred when Ridwan unlawfully broke into a female hostel at the university in the dead of night and attempted to assault one of the residents.
The student resisted the attack and raised the alarm, which drew the attention of other occupants and nearby students.
Ridwan fled the scene but was later apprehended during a coordinated manhunt by operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps.
Following his arrest, Ridwan reportedly confessed to the crime and was subsequently arraigned before Magistrate Ibukun Adeniran on a single count charge of attempted rape. He pleaded guilty.
During court proceedings, the prosecution presented the confessional statement obtained by the Osun Amotekun Corps and the testimony of a key witness.
Magistrate Adeniran found Ridwan guilty, citing his actions as a clear violation of Section 359 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume 2, Laws of Osun State, 2002.
In her ruling, she sentenced the defendant to three years imprisonment with hard labour, without the option of a fine.
The Osun Amotekun Corps has since commended the courage of the victim and the quick response of residents, stressing the importance of community vigilance in tackling sexual and gender-based violence.
The corps also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and ensuring justice for victims of sexual offences across the state.
