Popular Arewa social media influencer, Waspapping, has stirred controversy with his recent remarks targeting Northerners who support former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
In a post shared on his X handle early Monday, Waspapping claimed that any Northerner backing Obi’s presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 general election is “an enemy of Islam and the North.”
His statement has since triggered widespread debate online, with critics describing it as divisive and inflammatory, while supporters say he is voicing the concerns of many Northern youths who feel politically marginalized.
Waspapping, known for his controversial takes on politics and religion, did not provide further explanation or evidence to back his claims.
However, he suggested that Obi’s emergence as Nigeria’s president would undermine the interests of Northern Nigeria and the Islamic faith.
Political analysts and civil society groups have condemned the remarks, warning that such rhetoric could incite sectarian tension and undermine national unity.
“This kind of statement is dangerous, especially in a multi-religious and multi-ethnic country like Nigeria. It goes against the spirit of democracy and peaceful coexistence,” said a political analyst based in Kaduna
