Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has officially resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that Nigeria under the current administration is in a state of total collapse.
Amaechi made the announcement on Wednesday during the unveiling of the interim executive committee of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja.
He used the occasion to launch a scathing attack on both the APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing them of working in concert to hijack future elections.
“Nigeria is completely destroyed. People can’t eat. People can’t buy food. There’s no money to buy food. Everything is gone. Inflation is at its peak,” the former Rivers State governor lamented.
Amaechi disclosed that he formally left the APC on Tuesday night.
He expressed astonishment that the party had not expelled him earlier, adding that he had long distanced himself from APC activities.
“You can’t be in a club where the majority of people are stealing and you don’t say anything,” he said, defending his decision to walk away from the ruling party.
While clarifying that his political move was not just about forming a new party, Amaechi insisted it was time for Nigerians to reclaim power through a people-driven movement.
“It’s about changing Nigeria. What must happen here is that we must start not just a party, but a movement… to on their own take over government, not us,” he said.
In a bold critique of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Amaechi remarked, “I have never believed that Tinubu is a material to govern the country… People want Buhari to come back.”
Drawing a sharp comparison between the current economic climate and the previous administration, Amaechi noted the dramatic fall of the naira.
“Dollar was I think ₦460 or five hundred and something, now a dollar is ₦1,580. That is more than 100 per cent,” he said.
When asked if the currency crash was part of a deliberate government strategy, he responded, “Whether it’s a deliberate government policy or not, any government that does not take into consideration the people you are governing is not a policy. President Tinubu said he is not here to make Nigerians happy.”
Addressing speculation about his future political plans, Amaechi stated, “I have the right to be ambitious, I am not overambitious.”
