The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has launched a scathing attack on former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, over his involvement in the newly formed opposition coalition, questioning his record in public office.
Speaking during a media briefing on Thursday, Wike dismissed criticisms leveled by the coalition against President Bola Tinubu’s administration, particularly claims that the government has failed to address the economic hardship facing Nigerians.
Wike, a key ally of President Tinubu, singled out Tambuwal and former aviation minister Hadi Sirika, accusing them of political hypocrisy and underperformance during their time in government.
“Tambuwal, you were the Speaker of the House of Representatives for four years — what did you do to prevent Nigerians from being angry?” Wike asked.
“You governed Sokoto State for eight years, and yet the people rejected your preferred candidate.”
He further criticized Sirika over the controversial Nigeria Air project, alleging that it amounted to nothing despite huge investments.
“I saw Hadi Sirika in the coalition. They say Nigerians are angry and want to rescue Nigeria. So, I ask — what happened to Air Nigeria?” he saip
Wike also referenced loans taken during former minister Rotimi Amaechi’s tenure, suggesting that the country fared better economically then.
The opposition coalition, which includes Tambuwal, Sirika, and other former top officials, has consistently condemned the current administration, accusing it of worsening the plight of citizens through harsh economic policies.
However, Wike defended the Tinubu government’s efforts, stating that significant steps are being taken to tackle the challenges facing the country.
