A youth group under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the ADC Youth Vanguard, has cautioned that any move by former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to exit the ADC coalition could significantly undermine his political legacy.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the group, led by Comrade Abayomi Bello, responded to speculations surrounding Obi’s alleged plans to leave the ADC coalition if he fails to secure the party’s presidential ticket.
“We doubt that Mr. Tanko actually has Peter Obi’s mandate to say what he said,” the group stated, referring to earlier remarks made by a close ally of Obi.
The Youth Vanguard emphasized that Obi’s growing reputation as a principled leader, champion of youth engagement, and advocate for national progress would be at risk should he abandon the coalition over political ambition.
The statement also highlighted Obi’s previous movements across political platforms—from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), then to the Labour Party, and now the ADC coalition—warning that another defection could damage his credibility.
“Leaving the ADC now would portray him as just another politician seeking personal gain,” the group said, noting that building coalitions requires patience, collaboration, and a commitment to collective goals.
They further cautioned that a premature exit might alienate Obi from his support base, weaken existing political alliances, and demoralize many young Nigerians who had placed hope in a united opposition.
The group urged the former Anambra State governor to remain in the coalition, play a guiding role, and help build a long-lasting political structure.
“He should mentor young leaders, help shape the party’s direction, and build something that will last. That’s how true political legacies are created. Anything else could lead to political isolation,” the statement concluded.
