The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Monday met with protesting retired police officers in Abuja following a demonstration over poor welfare and retirement conditions.
The meeting, which took place at the Peacekeeping Hall of the Force Headquarters, came hours after the aggrieved retirees marched to the National Assembly to demand their removal from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
The protesters, many of whom were elderly, defied heavy rainfall as they carried placards and chanted slogans, expressing frustration over what they described as neglect by the government after years of service.
Addressing the retirees, the IGP acknowledged their grievances and assured them that their welfare remains a priority.
He, however, explained that the process of exiting the CPS is complex and cannot be executed overnight.
“The welfare of our retired officers is not being overlooked.
However, the Force’s exit from the Contributory Pension Scheme involves legal and procedural processes that must be properly followed,” Egbetokun said.
He urged the protest leaders to desist from spreading misleading information and emphasized that the Police Force would not abandon its former personnel.
