Shehu Sani to Kemi Badenoch: “Enjoy Your Adopted Home, Leave Nigeria Alone

Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has rebuked UK Conservative politician, Kemi Badenoch, over her remarks concerning Nigerian citizenship laws.

In an interview aired Sunday on CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS, Badenoch claimed Nigerian law prevents her from transferring her citizenship to her children because she is a woman. She also compared the ease of acquiring British citizenship with the difficulty of obtaining Nigerian nationality.

“It’s virtually impossible, for example, to get Nigerian citizenship. I have that citizenship by virtue of my parents. I can’t give it to my children because I’m a woman,” Badenoch said. “Yet loads of Nigerians come to the UK… acquire British citizenship. We need to stop being naive.”

Reacting via his X account on Monday, Senator Sani criticized the British lawmaker for her stance.

“Why should Kemi Badenoch be bothered about getting Nigerian citizenship for her offspring from a country she rebuked and rejected? She should just enjoy her adopted home and leave us alone in our father’s home,” Sani posted.

Badenoch, born in the UK to Nigerian parents, spent part of her childhood in Lagos before returning to Britain at age 16. She is married to Scottish banker Hamish Badenoch and has three children.
