The Kaduna State chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) says former governor Nasir El-Rufai remains a strong political force ahead of the 2027 general elections, despite controversies surrounding his membership.
Speaking with The Sun, the SDP State Publicity Secretary, Darius Kurah, described El-Rufai as a “strategic thinker” whose influence in Nigerian politics cannot be overlooked.
“El-Rufai is not just a former governor,” Kurah said. “He is a political heavyweight with national recognition and proven administrative competence. His decision to join the SDP boosted our party’s credibility and political strength.”
Kurah added that El-Rufai’s presence often unsettles those who resist meaningful change due to his large support base and reform-minded vision, which aligns with the SDP’s goals.
Recalls that El-Rufai officially left the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on March 10 and joined the SDP. His defection sparked reactions within and outside the party, leading to internal disagreements.
Recently, the former governor was expelled from the party, even as reports suggest he is collaborating with other opposition figures to unseat the current government in 2027.
