Obi on One-Term Promise: Constitution Allows It, I’ll Keep My Word

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has responded to recent remarks suggesting he needs psychiatric evaluation for promising to serve only one term if elected president.

Obi, through a statement by Ibrahim Umar of the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), said he has never been mentally evaluated or visited any shrine to swear an oath.

He reaffirmed that his promise to serve only four years is based on personal conviction and integrity.

The comments came after Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, said at a rally that any politician pledging a single term should undergo psychiatric evaluation.

Similarly, activist Deji Adeyanju recently claimed that even if Obi swore in a shrine to serve one term, Nigerians would still not believe him.

Obi, in his response, stated: “If making such a promise qualifies me for psychiatric evaluation, then we should also question the mental fitness of those who drafted our Constitution, which provides for a four-year renewable term.”

He emphasized that in his political career, he has always kept his promises and intends to continue doing so. Obi also reiterated his commitment to transforming Nigeria into a production-driven economy focused on agriculture, technology, and manufacturing.
