Liverpool and Egypt forward Mohamed Salah has raised concerns over UEFA’s tribute to Suleiman Al-Obeid, known as the ‘Palestinian Pelé,’ following the football legend’s death in Gaza.

The Palestinian Football Association confirmed that Al-Obeid, 41, was among Palestinians waiting for humanitarian aid when Israeli forces opened fire, resulting in his death.

However, UEFA’s tribute on social media did not mention the circumstances surrounding his passing.

Salah, who is a devout Muslim, took to his verified X account to seek clarity, asking, “Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?”

Al-Obeid was a celebrated figure in Palestinian football, earning 24 caps and scoring memorable goals, including a notable bicycle kick against Yemen in the 2010 West Asian Federation Cup.

He began his career with Al-Shati’a Services Club and later played for Gaza Sporting Club, finishing as top scorer in two consecutive seasons.

The Palestinian Football Association also revealed that hundreds of athletes and members of the football community have lost their lives amid ongoing conflicts since late 2023.

Al-Obeid leaves behind a wife, two sons, and three daughters.
