An Ekiti State Chief Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti has ordered the remand of a 34-year-old woman, Deborah Ayeni, for allegedly stealing a day-old baby from a health centre in the state capital.
The prosecutor, Inspector Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court on Wednesday that the offence, reportedly committed on August 4, 2025, has drawn public concern due to the rising cases of child theft in the state.
According to Oriyomi, the alleged offence contravenes Section 292 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State 2021.
He requested that the defendant be kept in custody pending further investigation, noting that the case file had been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
Ayeni, who was represented by counsel Stephen Ademuwagun, will remain at the Ado Ekiti Correctional Centre following the court’s ruling.
Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun adjourned the matter until September 12 for mention.
