Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has assured that he will support whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku, a leading figure in the coalition movement, made the pledge during a welcome ceremony for new defectors into the ADC fold in Lagos on Saturday.

The event, attended by prominent party stakeholders, saw key figures from the Labour Party (LP) and other political groups officially join the ADC.

Represented by Prof. Ola Olateju, Atiku said the party’s ticket would not be imposed on any aspirant but determined strictly through democratic processes.

“It is not a thing we can predetermine. Whoever emerges through free and fair contests, we are all going to support,” Atiku stated.

He emphasized that the primaries would provide a level playing field for all aspirants, with the ultimate winner expected to carry the collective mandate of the party and represent Nigerians across political, ethnic, and religious lines.

Also present at the Lagos reception were the ADC National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, Senator Kolawole Ogunwale, and Lagos State ADC Chairman, George Ashiru, who jointly welcomed the defectors into the party.

The build-up to the ADC primaries is already drawing attention, with three frontrunners in focus: Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State governor Chibuike Amaechi, and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.
