Human rights lawyer and activist, Maduabuchi Idam, has lamented that Nigerians are increasingly becoming helpless and frustrated under the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking in a statement to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary, Idam said the hardship being experienced across the country is worsening due to the high cost of living and multiple tax policies introduced by the government.
He warned that if the trend continues, many Nigerians might begin to seek refuge in other countries to survive.
“Truth is, several citizens feel used and entrapped in Nigeria at the moment. They are helpless and frustrated — I am one of them,” Idam said.
The lawyer noted that despite President Tinubu’s campaign promise to fix Nigeria’s electricity problems within seven days, residents of Abuja and other major cities have continued to endure long days of total blackout.
“Tell me why I should be spending my meager resources fueling my generator for over one week now, in the capital city of a country that just celebrated 65 years of independence,” he lamented.
Idam also criticized the lack of communication from relevant authorities over the persistent power outage since September 30, saying Nigerians deserve to know why electricity supply remains unstable.
“My area in Abuja and several others have not experienced a sign of electricity since September 30. No reason has been given for that. I’m not aware if the national grid has collapsed again,” he added.
According to him, Tinubu’s administration has failed to provide tangible relief to struggling citizens, adding that the combination of high taxes, inflation, and poor electricity has left the population exhausted and disillusioned.
“With the way things are going, neighbouring countries will soon witness a surge of Nigerian immigrants,” he warned.
Idam urged President Tinubu to revisit his economic policies and deliver on his promises to restore power, security, and dignity to the Nigerian people.
