Release of Nnamdi Kanu Would Be a National Betrayal, Says Bashir Ahmad

Former media aide to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, has slammed growing calls for the release of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, describing them as a “grave betrayal” of those killed during the group’s violent campaigns.

In a post shared on X on Thursday, Ahmad said it was wrong to advocate for leniency or pardon for individuals who “engineered killings and unleashed destruction” in the South East and beyond.

“It is a grave betrayal to the innocent lives lost and the countless victims of IPOB’s brutality to call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu,” Ahmad wrote.

The former presidential aide argued that Kanu’s actions incited unrest that tore families apart and destabilized communities.

He drew a parallel between IPOB’s violence and the devastation caused by Boko Haram, stressing that he has “never been in support of pardoning terrorists.”

“I witnessed firsthand the horrors and devastation caused by Boko Haram. They are killers and destroyers, and they knew exactly what they were doing when they were deliberately inflicting unimaginable pain on innocent people,” he added.

Ahmad maintained that after the state had expended “enormous resources, time, and lives” to capture such individuals, there should be no justification for granting them pardon.

His remarks come amid renewed appeals from political, traditional, and religious leaders urging President Bola Tinubu’s administration to release Kanu as a step toward restoring peace in the South East.
