The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has revealed that he took Nigeria’s situation before God during his recent visit to the Vatican City, describing the trip as one of deep reflection and intercession for the nation.
In a heartfelt statement titled “My Visit to the USA, Rome: Taking Nigeria’s Situation to God,” Obi explained that his visit followed a two-day engagement in the United States, where he addressed the Friendship Club and spoke at the 1st Ubuntu African Youth Assembly in Washington, D.C.
According to Obi, he arrived in Rome on October 6 to join his wife for a pilgrimage marking the Jubilee Year, an event celebrated every 25 years by the Catholic Church.
“We dedicated our prayers to Nigeria, thanking God that despite our differences and the many challenges we’ve faced over 65 years of independence, He has kept us together as one nation,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor noted that he and his wife sought forgiveness for the nation’s shortcomings and prayed for divine intervention in the face of Nigeria’s deepening hardship.
‘We prayed for God to inject into our political landscape selfless and compassionate leaders whose hearts He would touch—leaders committed to truth, service, and the welfare of all,” he added.
Obi recounted how they passed through three of the four Holy Doors of Rome’s major Papal Basilicas—St. Mary Major, St. Paul Outside the Walls, and St. John Lateran—offering prayers for mercy and renewal in each location.
He also disclosed that on October 8, they attended the Papal General Audience at St. Peter’s Basilica, where they listened to a sermon by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on hope and perseverance.
“At St. Peter’s, we were privileged to be received in audience by His Holiness, to whom we humbly appealed for prayers for our beloved country,” Obi stated.
The Labour Party leader emphasized that while faith is essential, Nigerians must not leave everything to divine providence alone.
“Faith does not absolve us of responsibility; it calls us to action,” he said. “We must each continue to do our part with honesty, diligence, and love for the healing and progress of our country.”
