At 65, I’d Rather Stay Home Than Take Tinubu’s Appointment — Fayose

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has revealed that he declined an appointment offer from President Bola Tinubu, saying he prefers to focus on his private life after years in public service.

Fayose made this known on Wednesday during an interview on Politics Today, a programme aired on Channels Television.

The former governor, who is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said that although he maintains a long-standing personal relationship with President Tinubu, he has no intention of joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) or accepting any political role under the current administration.

“Have you seen me taking appointment from the APC? Asiwaju asked me, ‘What would we give you?’ I said, ‘Nothing, sir,’” Fayose disclosed.

The ex-governor added that at 65, he would rather prioritise personal responsibilities than return to public office.

“At 65, I’d rather be at home, being more responsible and doing other things that I need to do. I’ve served well two-time governor, I’ve done well. Tomorrow will hold itself,” he said.

Fayose further clarified that his friendship with the President does not translate into political alignment.

“I’ve not been with the APC, but I’ve been Asiwaju’s friend and brother for a long time. That is the truth,” he added.

On the forthcoming 2027 general elections, Fayose said only Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, currently has the national appeal and public traction capable of mounting a serious challenge against the ruling APC.

“Tell me who would defeat APC? The only opposition that I know in Nigeria  I am not saying he will win Asiwaju  is Obi. Despite not being in government, he’s the only one talking and everywhere. I give it to him,” he stated.

Fayose, known for his outspoken nature, added that while he continues to offer constructive criticism, his decisions are guided by principle rather than personal benefit.
