Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has filed a defamation lawsuit against activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju, seeking ₦1 billion in damages over alleged false and malicious statements made on social media.
The case, lodged at the Anambra State High Court in Onitsha, accuses Mr Adeyanju of publishing “baseless and reckless” remarks designed to tarnish Mr Obi’s reputation.
According to the suit, the former Anambra State governor is also demanding ₦500 million in exemplary damages and an unreserved public apology from the activist.
Responding to the legal action, Mr Adeyanju confirmed he had been served with court documents and expressed relief that Mr Obi had gone ahead with his threat to pursue the case.
“Finally, Peter Obi has sued me. I’m actually happy and relieved that he didn’t chicken out in the end,” he said. “Interestingly, he dragged me all the way to Anambra State, even though he is almost always in Abuja where I reside. But no shaking — we move.”
The matter is expected to come up for hearing in the coming weeks at the Anambra State High Court, Onitsha.
