The media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Paul Ibe, has taken a swipe at presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga for calling for sanctions against Aloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Onanuga had accused Ejimakor of breaching the principle of sub judice by joining forces with activist Omoyele Sowore in the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest held in Abuja, describing the lawyer’s participation as “extra-legal tactics.”
Reacting in a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ibe lambasted Onanuga, accusing him of turning every national issue into political drama while Nigerians continue to grapple with hunger and hardship.
“Dear Bayo Onanuga, everything must not necessarily be about politics. You serve an incompetent and clueless President who has abandoned governance for politics,” Ibe wrote. “Nigeria’s Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners (2007) do not prohibit lawyers from joining peaceful protests related to their clients. Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution guarantees freedom of assembly, even for lawyers.”
He further mocked Onanuga’s position, asking how the call for Ejimakor’s sanction “affects the prices of rice, beans, yam, and milk, or the well-being of the average Nigerian.”
