Heavy security presence was observed around the Presidential Villa and key areas in Abuja on Monday as protesters demanded the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
According to Punch Online, soldiers, armoured vehicles, and security operatives from multiple agencies cordoned off major routes leading to Aso Rock and other sensitive areas within the Federal Capital Territory.
The demonstration, led by activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, caused traffic disruptions across the city as authorities enforced roadblocks and stop-and-search operations.
At about 6:00 a.m., combined teams of soldiers, police, and DSS operatives had sealed off access roads to the Three Arms Zone, home to the Presidential Villa, National Assembly, and Supreme Court.
Civil servants with Villa tags were turned back at entry points, while movement around major government institutions remained restricted throughout the day.
The protesters, under the #FreeNnamdiKanu campaign, are demanding compliance with court orders directing the Federal Government to release the IPOB leader.
Kanu, who was arrested and extradited from Kenya in June 2021, remains in DSS custody despite multiple court rulings granting him bail. His supporters have expressed concern over his deteriorating health.
Sowore described the protest as a call for justice and respect for the rule of law, accusing the government of ignoring judicial directives.
As of 5:00 p.m. on Monday, security operatives were still stationed at key locations around the capital.
