Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has been appointed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to head its Election Observation Mission for the upcoming presidential election in Côte d’Ivoire.

Scheduled for October 25, 2025, the high-stakes election comes at a critical juncture for the West African region, as several member states brace for national polls while striving to strengthen democratic governance.

In an official statement, ECOWAS outlined that the observation mission will run from October 19 to 29, 2025, and will see Osinbajo lead a delegation of prominent West Africans engaging with national stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.

“The team will collaborate with both international and domestic observers to closely monitor the conduct of the polls,” the statement said, underscoring ECOWAS’ commitment to peace, stability, and electoral integrity in West Africa.

Observers note that Osinbajo’s leadership of the mission highlights Nigeria’s influence in regional democratic affairs and ECOWAS’ proactive approach in preventing electoral disputes that could destabilise the region.

Côte d’Ivoire’s election, often seen as a bellwether for West African democracy, will now unfold under the vigilant eyes of ECOWAS, with Osinbajo at the helm.
