Laolu Akande, former spokesman to ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has accused the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, of deliberately avoiding trial, insisting that he is “playing politics” with the Nigerian judiciary.
Speaking in a video shared on his X handle on Monday, Akande claimed Kanu’s recent actions show he is not ready to face justice and is instead seeking public sympathy.
“The IPOB leader deserves a fair and prompt trial, but it’s becoming clear that Nnamdi Kanu doesn’t want this trial to be sorted out in a law court,” Akande said.
“First, they said his health couldn’t take the trial, but doctors confirmed he’s fit. Then, on Thursday, he said he would defend himself, only to change his mind again today.”
Akande urged both Kanu and the Federal Government to consider a political solution to the lingering case but maintained that such a settlement must come with accountability and remorse.
According to him, “A political settlement should be welcomed, but only if Kanu admits his past wrongs, apologizes publicly, and takes responsibility for the chaos his actions have caused.”
He further advised the Federal Government to approach the matter with wisdom, saying a sincere apology from Kanu could pave the way for a peaceful resolution.
Akande’s statement comes amid renewed controversy surrounding Kanu’s court appearances, his disengagement of lawyers, and claims that the government has no substantial case against him.
