Abdulsalami to Trump: Support Nigeria’s War on Insecurity, Not Fuel Division

Former Military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), has called on U.S. President Donald Trump to support Nigeria’s ongoing fight against insecurity rather than issuing threats that could endanger the nation’s stability.

Abdulsalami’s remarks follow Trump’s decision last Friday to redesignate Nigeria as a “country of particular concern (CPC)” over alleged persecution of Christians  a move that has drawn mixed reactions across the country.

Describing Trump’s comments as a “grave threat to Nigeria’s hard-won unity,” the elder statesman urged citizens to close ranks in the face of external pressure and safeguard national sovereignty.

“Unity, wisdom, and diplomacy must take precedence over division and pride at this critical moment,” he stated.

He further advised the Nigerian government to engage the U.S. diplomatically, emphasizing that strategic dialogue with Washington remains the best path to de-escalating tensions and strengthening bilateral cooperation.
