Thirty-eight worshippers who were abd*cted during an att@ck on the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, have regained their freedom after coordinated security efforts, the state government announced on Sunday.
According to officials, arm*d men stormed the church during a prayer retreat earlier in the week, shooting sporadically before seizing 38 congregants and moving them into the surrounding forest. Several others were reported injured in the incident, which drew widespread concern from residents and religious groups.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq confirmed the release of all abd*cted vict!ms, stating that the operation benefited from close cooperation between federal and state security agencies. He highlighted the role of President Bola Tinubu’s directive, as well as the involvement of the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Department of State Services, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Police.
Local reports indicated that the kidn*ppers had initially demanded a high ransom, which was later reduced as security pressure increased. Authorities did not confirm whether any payment was made.
The freed worshippers are receiving medical checks and psychological support following several days in captivity.
Community leaders in Eruku expressed relief at the development but reiterated the need for strengthened security arrangements around worship centres, schools, and rural communities.
The Kwara State Government stated that it will continue to enhance cooperation with national security bodies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
