Kebbi Schoolgirls Released, Critics Say Govt Negotiating With T3rrorists

FATI SALAM

President Bola Tinubu has welcomed the release of 24 schoolgirls abdųct*d from a school in Maga, Kebbi State on November 17, shortly after a military detachment had left the premises.

In a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Tinubu commended the security agencies for their role in securing the girls’ release and urged intensified operations to prevent further kidn*ppings in vulnerable areas.

The release comes amid a surge of mass kidn@ppings across the country, including 38 students in Eruku, Kwara State, and  students in Papiri, Niger State, who were recently reunited with their families.

Critics and activists, however, have questioned the government’s approach to tackling the spate of abd*ctions. They argue that while the release of some victims is being celebrated, bandits continue to terrorize other communities, raising fears that the government may be negotiating with t*rror!sts instead of decisively confronting them.

Analysts warn that without a sustained, strategic response, these cycles of abd*ction and release risk emboldening crim!nals, undermining public confidence in the authorities, and leaving students and rural communities perpetually at risk.

President Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to safeguarding students and vulnerable populations, pledging continued support for security operations across affected regions.Activists, however, insist that words are not enough, calling for decisive action to end the cycle of t*rror once and for all.
