Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from his position with immediate effect.
In a letter dated December 1, Badaru told President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that he was stepping down for health reasons.
According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and thanked Badaru for his service.
The President is expected to announce his replacement to the Senate later this week.
Badaru, 63, served as Governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before being appointed Defence Minister in August 2023.
His resignation comes at a time when President Tinubu has declared a national security emergency, with more details expected soon.
