Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has invited the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, and other pro-Wike lawmakers to a crucial meeting scheduled for Monday at the Government House, Port Harcourt.
The invitation was communicated through a letter dated March 7, signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, following the recent Supreme Court ruling which reinstated the Amaewhule-led faction of the Assembly.
The lawmakers are known to be loyal to the former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
In the letter, Governor Fubara acknowledged the apex court’s decision and expressed readiness to engage the legislators in constructive dialogue.
“And he has, therefore, directed to invite you and your colleagues, the Honourable members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, to a meeting,” the letter stated.
Sources close to the Government House disclosed that key items expected to dominate the meeting include arrangements for a conducive venue for Assembly sittings, payment of outstanding remunerations and allowances, and broader discussions on legislative matters.
Political observers see the governor’s outreach as a conciliatory gesture aimed at fostering unity and restoring stability in the governance of the state amid the prolonged leadership tussle between factions in the Assembly.
The outcome of the meeting may determine the next phase in the relationship between the executive and legislative arms in the state, as stakeholders watch closely for signs of reconciliation or renewed friction.
