Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has insisted that the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, cannot deny his attempts to reach out amid the ongoing political crisis in the state.
Speaking during the commissioning of the Bori Zonal Hospital in Khana Local Government Area, Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to prioritizing the interests of Rivers people, even as tensions between the executive and legislative arms remain unresolved.
Addressing the impasse, the governor stated that in compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling, he had made multiple efforts to engage the Speaker and other Assembly members, particularly concerning the presentation of the state budget.
According to Fubara, he had sent WhatsApp messages and made direct attempts to reach Amaewhule, but all efforts were ignored. Additionally, he lamented being denied access to the Assembly complex despite his willingness to engage constructively.
“The situation is unfortunate, but I am still open to dialogue,” Fubara said. “Perhaps when they receive the necessary instruction, they will allow me to present the budget properly.”
The governor further cautioned politicians against the illusion of absolute power, emphasizing that no position is permanent. He warned that the misuse of authority ultimately leads to self-destruction, reaffirming his commitment to exercising restraint in handling the crisis.
“There is life beyond political office,” he added, urging his supporters, particularly the youth, to remain resolute. “We have not lost this battle.”
