Troops attached to the convoy of Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, successfully repelled an attempted ambush by Boko Haram insurgents along the Buni Gari–Buni Yadi road.
According to counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, the attack occurred as the convoy, which included troops from Operation Hadin Kai, a Police Crack Team, and senior government officials, was returning from Biu Local Government Area.
Although Governor Zulum was not in the convoy at the time—having earlier traveled by helicopter—the security personnel responded swiftly to the attempted assault, engaging the insurgents in a gun battle. An unconfirmed number of terrorists were reportedly neutralized during the encounter.
In a significant breakthrough, seven travelers who had been abducted by the terrorists were rescued unharmed after the troops disrupted the attempted kidnapping. The victims were reportedly in a Volkswagen vehicle when the attackers struck.
Security sources noted that all personnel in the convoy were safe, and no casualties were recorded on the side of the government team. Troops also recovered arms and motorcycles left behind by the fleeing insurgents.
The swift and coordinated response underscores ongoing efforts by security forces to secure volatile routes in the North-East and curb insurgent activities in the region.
