Thomas Tuchel has weighed in on the debate surrounding Reece James’ best position, following suggestions by Enzo Maresca that the Chelsea captain could thrive in midfield.
James played a key role in Tuchel’s Champions League-winning Chelsea side, was included in the German manager’s first England squad on Friday — his first national team call-up since March 2023
Since Tuchel’s departure from Stamford Bridge, James’ career has been hampered by recurring injuries, especially to his hamstring.
However, he has shown promise this season in a new midfield role under Enzo Maresca.
Despite his progress, Tuchel disagrees with his successor’s assessment, insisting that James is better suited to a full-back role.
He added that the 25-year-old must still prove he can once again command the flank as he did in his earlier years
“I still feel he is a player for the full-back or wing-back positions,” Tuchel said. “We already have enough players in central midfield who are specialists in that role.”
The former Chelsea manager also challenged James to prove he can still deliver the high-energy performances expected from a modern full-back.
“We need to see if he can do this—get up and down the flanks consistently. To be honest, he needs to prove that he can do it.”
