Renowned virologist and former Vice Chancellor of Redeemer’s University, Prof. Oyewale Tomori, has urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to ensure its economic reforms translate into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

Speaking during the Friday edition of Inside Sources with Laolu Akande on Channels Television, Prof. Tomori stressed that while citizens have shown remarkable patience, the government must now demonstrate visible progress to justify the continued sacrifices being made by the people.

He noted that Nigerians have endured significant hardship in the past 22 months following the implementation of key economic policies — particularly the removal of petrol subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange rates — introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“We must not only focus on the immediate but also think about the long-term impact. Where are these policies taking us? If they promise a better future, then we need to be patient,” Tomori said.

Acknowledging some positive signs from the reforms, he cautioned against dismissing the government’s efforts outright but insisted that patience has a limit.

“It is easy to destroy, but it takes time to rebuild. People have been told to be patient, but the government must realize that patience is not endless,” he said.

“People need to see results — improvements in their lives, real and positive changes. Only then can any government earn public support.”

Tomori also called on the government to tackle persistent challenges such as insecurity and poor electricity supply, noting that creating a conducive environment is critical for people to thrive.

Furthermore, he challenged state governments across the country to step up and play a more active role in delivering meaningful benefits to their citizens.

According to him, national development requires not only federal action but also commitment and effective governance at the subnational level.
