President Donald Trump said Friday that the man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk should face the death penalty if convicted.
Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested after a two-day manhunt in Utah. Authorities said his father, Matt Robinson, confronted him and obtained a confession before alerting a clergyman, who then notified law enforcement. U.S. Marshals arrested Robinson at 10 p.m. local time.
“He’s going to be found guilty, I imagine. And I hope he gets the death penalty,” Trump told Fox News in a live interview. “Charlie Kirk was the finest person. He didn’t deserve this. He worked so hard, and so well. Everybody liked him.”
Kirk, 31, a father of two, was fatally shot Wednesday by a gunman wielding a hunting rifle on the campus of Utah Valley University.
The attack sent shockwaves through conservative circles, where Kirk was a prominent and polarizing figure.
Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive.
