Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has said that malaria has become rare in Lagos, following repeated laboratory investigations conducted with leading scientists.
During a briefing, the commissioner advised residents to demand clear test evidence before accepting any malaria diagnosis.
“If they tell you that you have malaria, question it. Ask to see the test cartridge. It is a simple yes-or-no result,” Abayomi said.
‘Malaria–Typhoid’ Diagnosis Criticised
Abayomi condemned the widespread “malaria-typhoid” diagnosis frequently given in clinics, describing it as a misleading combination that leads to unnecessary treatment with anti-malarials, antibiotics, and pain relievers.
He noted that many patients actually suffer from viral illnesses that resemble malaria symptoms but require rest rather than aggressive medication.
“Many people want injections or IV fluids, so they push for a malaria diagnosis. But in many cases, what they have is a viral illness,” he said.
Malaria Prevalence Drops to 1.3% in Lagos
According to health data, only 1.3% of fever cases in Lagos are caused by malaria, reflecting a significant decline over recent years. Officials attributed the progress to strengthened collaboration between public and private health facilities, improved laboratory testing, and the use of digital tools for case tracking and surveillance.
Abayomi said similar locally developed strategies could be extended to neighbouring states such as Ogun and Oyo, where malaria cases remain more common.
Authorities Warn Against Presumptive Treatment
The state government reiterated that indiscriminate malaria treatment is unsafe, as misdiagnosis can delay proper care and contribute to drug resistance.
Health authorities urged residents to rely on verified test results, avoid self-medication, and adhere to medical advice.
