Issue An Executive Order On State Police Creation Pending Constitution Amendment; Afenifere Tells Tinubu

The pan-Yoruba sociopolitical organisation, Afenifere has charged President Bola Tinubu to issue an executive order for the formation of state and LGA police.

Afenifere said that there is a compelling need for the federal government to be more innovative in tackling insecurity across the country.

Over the past few years, there has been frequent call for the establishment of state police to complement the efforts of the federal police in addressing insecurity in states.

Speakers of the 36 state houses of assembly, on 16th of May, supported the current process by the national assembly to establish state police.

In a statement released on Saturday, Jare Ajayi, spokesperson of Afenifere, called for the installation of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras and other modern technologies in strategic areas across the country.

He lamented that armed robbers and kidnappers have taken over several roads even in the south-west region of the nation.

“There are indications that Tinubu is desirous of putting an end to this deleterious menace,” PUNCH quoted him as saying.

“Towards the end of January this year, he approved the procurement of digital tracking tools to enhance the apprehension of bandits, terrorists and armed robbers.

“On Monday, April 22, this year, he used the occasion of addressing participants at the African counter-terrorism summit which opened on that day in Abuja to assure everyone of his government’s readiness to ensure greater security.

“Unfortunately, recent happenings have not shown that the president’s desire in this respect is being worked upon.

“President Tinubu should get state and local government police off the ground immediately through the invocation of an executive order while the process of amending the constitution continues.”

Ajayi said the federal government must also aggrandize the welfare of Nigerians as part of the measures to end insecurity.
