Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has sincerely pleaded with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to commemorate two of Nigeria’s greatest writers by renaming important roads in Abuja in their honor.
Wike proposed that the 32km Guzape District Lot II Road be named after the late literary icon Chinua Achebe.
During the commissioning ceremony of the Guzape District Lot II Road on Saturday, Wike also suggested naming another road within the same district after renowned poet and playwright J.P. Clark.
“I want to appeal to you, just like what you did last time to some Nigerians who have in one way or another, particularly in writing, literary works, made the nation proud. People like Chinua Achebe, people like J.P. Clark,” Wike said.
He continued, “Your Excellency, I want to appeal to you, let this road be named after Chinua Achebe and there’s another road within the same district that can be named against J.P. Clark. This is an appeal to you. These are people that have contributed just like the Nobel Laureate did.”
Wike’s appeal highlights the significant contributions of Achebe and Clark to Nigerian literature and culture, suggesting that naming prominent roads after them would be a fitting tribute to their legacies.
