Former Kaduna lawmaker Senator Shehu Sani has praised the Supreme Court for liberating local councils from over two decades of captivity and systemic plunder.
Senator Sani’s statement follows the Supreme Court’s decision, which ordered state governors to relinquish control over funds allocated to the country’s 774 local government areas.
The court declared that state control of these funds is unconstitutional, thereby affirming the financial independence of local councils.
“The Supreme Court has freed the local governments from over two decades of captivity and systemic plunder by the states,” Sani remarked.
He emphasized the significance of the ruling, highlighting how state interference had hindered local development and governance.
The ruling is expected to bring about significant changes in the management of local government funds, promoting transparency and accountability.
